Remember the Food Guide Pyramid? It has now been replaced by the all new Choose My Plate. The new, simpler image is a plate divided into four sections for fruit, vegetables, grains and protein, with an adjacent circle representing dairy. Choose My Plate was unveiled by First Lady Michelle Obama in early June as part of her signature campaign against obesity. The plate was developed by the Department of Agriculture (USDA) with input from nutrition and public health experts, as well as an estimated 4,500 focus-group participants, including children. The primary goal of Choose My Plate is to help educate consumers about the Dietary Guidelines for Americans released earlier this year. To support the new image, the USDA developed an all-new interactive Web site www.choosemyplate.gov which offers consumers great tools and tips for making healthier choices.
How do you feel about Choose My Plate vs the Food Guide Pyramid? Do you think the new plate-shaped symbol will make a difference in helping people change what and how much they eat?
