Have you ever told a little white lie in the presence of your children? Cheaper to get them into the movie if they are under 5 years old, but in all honesty they just turned 6 a few days ago? Free at the buffet if they are less than 3 years old? Maybe there is a knock at the door, but you just don’t want to deal with the neighbor so you pretend you aren’t home.
These little white lies may seem like nothing in the big scheme of things, but what is it really saying to your child?
- It is okay to tell small lies
- You aren’t hurting anyone by telling lies
- Being dishonest is appropriate if you are benefiting from it
- It is okay to lie to some people, but not others
Are these really the values you are trying to instill in your kids? Probably not, just keep it in mind the next time you are put in a difficult situation; little eyes are watching everything that you do and many times are watching to see how you will respond.
