There is more to being healthy than just being physically fit.  We must be fit emotionally as well.

When was the last time that you stopped and enjoyed the simple things in life?  The beauty of a wild flower? The sound of the birds chirping outside? The relaxing sound of the water flowing down the creek?

When our children are young, we are the primary caregivers and nurturers. As our children grow up, we are their alarm clock, maid, chef, counselor, timekeeper, chauffeur, cheerleader, nurse, etc.  We must also keep the household functioning and, for those of us who work, we must show up to our jobs everyday focused and full of energy.  Let’s not forget that we must play an active role in our marriage and other relationships.

I don’t know about you, but I often feel guilty when I want to take some time for myself or if I want to spend money on myself for a massage or a manicure/pedicure. One of the most important things that I’ve learned over the past year and a half is that I am worth it. It is OK to make it all about me every now and then. Life can drain us on a daily basis. I am a much happier woman if I take some time for myself on a regular basis whether it be to pamper myself or to just sit back, take a deep breath and find joy in the simple things of this world that are often overlooked. It is in those simple things that I find myself. We tend to forget that we have our own interests and likes, not just those of our spouse and children.

I challenge you to stop for a moment each day, take a deep breath, and look around you.  Use your senses to see, hear, smell, taste and/or touch something simple that you overlook every day.  It could be the sound of a helicopter or the brilliant color and strength of a sunflower. You may have to force yourself to take time each day, but eventually you will start to notice and appreciate the simple things that make it all about you.  As you sit quietly for a moment, make a list of three things that you enjoy. When was the last time that you did one of those things? Isn’t it about time that you make it all about you?
