When it comes to trends, the “Old Hollywood” look can be quite mesmerizing. The glamorous looks of the 1940’s and 1950’s are enough to leave you wishing you’d been born in the days of Marilyn Monroe and pin-up girls. Amidst all the diamonds, furs, sexy poses and fancy dresses was also see the glamorous makeup. Flawless faces, gorgeous skin, a touch of cat eye and glorious red lips made this look stand apart from all others throughout the years. It screams sophistication and sex appeal with still a whisper of innocence and class. While this look has been seen on and off the runways throughout the years, it’s back in full force this season and you don’t need a catwalk, silver screen or even an invite to a top notch gala to sport it!
The very first step to achieving the Old Hollywood Glam look is to have flawless skin. Unlike many popular looks today, this is one look that allows you to skip the self tanner. Women of the 40’s and 50’s had more natural skin tones. Start by exfoliating your face thoroughly and then apply a good moisturizer. Prep your face with a primer, preferably an illuminating one, and use a foundation that produces an airbrushed affect. The Smashbox HD line is a great one to try and provides everything from primer to powder for a flawless look.
The next point of focus is the eyes. Unlike the nude makeup look featured earlier this week, the eyes are not the main focal point of this look, so the makeup here is very light, but also very precise. Use silver, white or light beige shadow all over the lid, and choose one with a bit of shimmer to it. Next, choose a liquid or gel liner in black and apply to the top lash line only. The trick is to stay as close to the lash line as possible, and then give it just the slightest flick at the corner for a touch of cat eye. Finish the eyes with several coats of black mascara, again just focusing on the top lashes for that gorgeous pin-up look.
Next, you will want to shape your brows. Luckily, this look works well with both a thin or full brow. The trick though is adding in a good arch. If you lack a natural arch, visit your local salon and ask them to shape your brows. For a quick fix, use a brow pencil or powder close to your natural color to fill in your brows and create a mock arch.
Now it’s time to tend to those lips! The Old Hollywood Glam look is all about the lips so take your time on this step. First, make sure your lips have been thoroughly prepped by exfoliating them and smoothing them with a hydrating balm. Next, you’ll want to grab a lip pencil that closely matches the shade of red lipstick that you’ve chosen. Lightly draw the line around your lips, extending just slightly when you reach the Cupid ’s bow. Use your finger to slightly smudge the line inward in order to avoid that “outlined” look. When it comes to filling in your lips, choose your shade and formula wisely. If you have a warmer skin tone, choose a shade of red that has an orange base to it. For cool skin tones, a bright blue-based red is always your go-to choice. When it comes to formula, choosing a long lasting one will always be your best option. While this look is gorgeous, no woman wants to spend half the evening touching up their glam look because they keep leaving it behind on glasses and napkins. Two best picks are L’Oreal Infallible Plumping Lipgloss and MAC Pro Longwear Lipcrème. Both give a long-lasting wear and a smooth, hydrated feel. Finish the lips off with just a touch of sparkly gloss to the center of the bottom lip just to give your pout a little more power.
Finally, finish off the look with a light dusting of a red or rose colored blush to the apples of the cheeks for that “just pinched” look. While this look works best with a knockout dress, it can easily be given a touch of funky with the right jeans or accessories (think Gwen Stefani). So get your glam on ladies and give those old Vargas girls a run for their money!
