Moms are busy these days. Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or a company CEO, we all wish there were a couple more hours in the day to get it all done! Fitting fitness into your schedule may be tricky. Here are five creative ways to fit fitness into your hectic schedule.

Make friends with the stoplight! Instead of getting annoyed on those days when it seems you hit every red light, use those moments to your advantage. For example, practice vacuum breathing at a red light. Place your hands on your belly. Inhale and extend your tummy into your hands. Exhale sharply and pull the abdominals in and imagine them pulling up. This is a great way to train the transverse abdominals and get you one step closer to that coveted six-pack. You’ll start wishing the lights were longer!

Love your carpool schedule. Feeling like a one-mom taxi service can get overwhelming. When you are waiting for the kids to finish soccer or gymnastics, use the time to your advantage. Hop out of the car and take a brisk walk. If you have to stay put, start carrying a jump rope in the car. Alternate between 50 skips and 5 pushups. You can even do the pushups standing up by placing your hands on the bumper of your car.

Amp up your dog walk. When your pup is ready to go for that morning walk, make it a mini workout. Every time your dog stops to sniff and do his thing, throw in 10 squats or alternating lunges. Your dog may look at you like you are crazy at first, but he’ll love the extra sniffing time once he’s used to your new routine.

Use your phone as a fitness buddy. Do your conversations with your mom or a good friend sometimes take a half hour or more? Use that time to add exercise to your day. Hold the phone in one hand, hold the counter or a chair with the other. Work on your core and balance by standing on one foot, then bending and stretching that supporting leg. Switch sides after 10 reps, then repeat, playing with the position of the foot that is not on the ground. Bring the toe to the knee, stretch it out in front, or behind.

Commercial break-a-sweat! While watching your favorite TV show, use the commercial breaks for a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). Commercial breaks are usually a couple minutes long. Do jumping jacks, jump squats, leap from one foot to the other, or pretend you are jumping rope until the program comes back on. Rest until the next commercial break!
