A post-workout shake is a simple and effective way to refuel after your workout, but plain chocolate or vanilla can get boring.  “Shake” things up with one of these fun recipes after your next sweat session. Ready, set, BLEND!

1. Blueberry Spinach Sipper from Muscle & Fitness Hers

  • 1 cup frozen blueberries (if not frozen, add 2 ice cubes)
  • 1 cup packed baby spinach leaves, washed and stems removed
  • 1 cup 1% low fat milk or almond milk
  • 1 medium banana
  • 6 tbsp protein powder of choice

Spinach provides calcium and also contributes vitamin K which helps strengthens bones. Blueberries and bananas provide the potassium you need to keep your muscles and heart working properly. Both fruits, along with the spinach, supply fiber to keep you feeling fuller longer.

2. Lolo Jones’ “Olympic” Post-Workout Shake

  • 1 banana
  • Handful of strawberries
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 2 tbsp protein powder
  • Honey (to taste)
  • Water (add ice if you like it thicker)

Olympic athlete Lolo Jones knows about nourishing herself with protein shakes – “It’s key for an athlete to have a protein shake within 15 to 20 minutes after a workout.”

3. Tosca’s Tropical Thunder from Oxygen Magazine

  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • 5 cherries
  • 1 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 1 banana

Whip up this tropical protein shake with cherries after your workout to reduce muscle soreness!

4. Ruby Red Berry Protein Shake from Michelle Marie Fit

  • 4 “fruity” ice cubes (blend leftover ripe fruit in blender with water and almond milk, and freeze in ice cube trays)
  • ¼ cup almond milk
  • 1/3 cup frozen raspberries
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • Water to desired consistency

This one would be great with a berry flavored protein powder!

5. Also from Michelle Marie Fit, try this Mocha Banana Split Shake

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • ¼ frozen banana
  • ¼ tsp instant coffee (mmmm…coffee!!)
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder

Sprinkle with almond slices to top it off if desired.

6. Of course, my Summer Punch Protein Shake is my personal favorite for after my workouts!

  • 1 cup lemonade
  • ½ cup frozen strawberries
  • ½ cup frozen peaches
  • 1 banana
  • ½ cup plain nonfat yogurt
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
