Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I need to eat within 30 minutes after waking up, otherwise I am dizzy. I know that eating breakfast will kick-start your metabolism- something a 42 year old mom needs!  I’ve always had a leisurely breakfast.  I get up an hour before anyone else just to eat my breakfast and drink coffee for an hour. I usually read the newspaper or watch the news while enjoying my coffee in the quiet. My husband, on the other hand, used to skip breakfast until lunch time.  He was never hungry in the morning.  Now that he is working out and following a healthy diet, he makes sure he eats breakfast every morning.  My youngest son and daughter are like me.  They come downstairs in their pajamas and hair sticking up demanding breakfast.  My oldest son is like his dad and would go until lunch without eating if I didn’t make him have breakfast every day. I tell him to imagine he is a car. After a long night of sleeping, his fuel tank is empty and food is what he needs to start his engine.

Sometimes we get so busy that it is easier to have the kids eat a bowl of cereal every morning.  It is quick and easy to grab a box, pour it into a bowl and go. We got to the point where they were eating too much sugary cereal each day.  We started splitting the cereal options between one sugary cereal and one healthy cereal. Finally, I decided to put extra effort into my children’s breakfast and create a special menu. We created a Monday-Friday menu I posted on the wall and the kids make sure I follow it.

  • Monday – Oatmeal (with fruit)
  • Tuesday – Eggs (with wheat English muffins)
  • Wednesday – Waffles or French Toast
  • Thursday – Pancakes (with fruit inside)
  • Friday – Cereal

The weekends are a free-for all, so we can make whatever we want. Now that we are opting to have other items besides cereal, we are saving money on the hefty price of $4.00 a box.  I can also feel better about what I am serving my kids. I know that kids who eat breakfast do better in school, participate in more physical activities, and tend to eat healthier foods overall. My children have really embraced the new breakfast menu and are excited to see what is in store for them each morning. I, as a busy mom, feel better about taking the extra time to make something better for them each morning.
