One of its roles is to maintain hemoglobin in your red blood cells to allow successful transport of oxygen. This process is important for your brain health. It also helps your metabolism and in the maintenance of your central nervous system.

Vitamin B12 can be found in meat, fish, shellfish, breakfast cereals and dairy products. The body tends to absorb animal sources of the vitamin better than plant sources.

The human body stores years’ worth of this vitamin in your liver, meaning low levels of vitamin B12 is rare. A vitamin B12 deficiency happens when the body is unable to absorb the amount of vitamins it needs. Decreases in vitamin B12 usually happen in the elderly, HIV-infected, vegetarians and vegans. Some people are unable to absorb vitamin B12 through their intestinal tract which causes a type of anemia called pernicious anemia. Symptoms include fever and excessive sweating, but this can easily be treated with a vitamin B12 treatment.

Supplements are often used to help with memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. It also can boost your mood, energy, concentration and immune system. There have also been some connections with slowing down the aging process. (via Mayo Clinic)
