Spring has officially sprung and we’ve let out a loud, collective “Hooray!” that the winter has finally ended! Having moved from Florida to Tennessee last fall, I can tell you that I was especially grateful for spring’s arrival. Apart from the warming temperatures, the beauty of spring is truly miraculous. Dead, lifeless ground is suddenly populated with tufts of bright green grass and big, vibrant flowers. Trees go from naked to fully swathed in new leaves practically overnight. It’s a tremendous sight to behold unless, of course, you suffer from seasonal allergies.
Itchy, watery eyes and a runny, sneezy nose are enough to drive anyone crazy and blur the beauty that is spring. According to the Allergy & Asthma Foundation of America, over 45 million Americans consider themselves a nasal allergy sufferer. That’s a whole lot of people, wouldn’t you say!? Fortunately, there are some safe, natural, effective ways to help combat and treat seasonal allergies. Here are my top three.

Essential oils: You may or may not have been bitten by the essential oil bug, but let me just tell you that I am a believer! The market is flooded with choices when it comes to using nature’s plants for healing, so be sure to choose high quality, therapeutic grade oils that are safe for consumption. Then, blast those allergies away! My favorite combination is lovingly referred to as the “allergy bomb.” It consists of:
- 2 drops lemon
- 2 drops lavender
- 2 drops peppermint
You simply add these to a shot of water and drink up 2-3 times/day, as needed. I easily acquire the oils needed through doTERRA’s introductory kit.
Local honey: There is a longstanding debate on the effectiveness of this method, but when it comes to alleviating allergies, most of us are willing to try anything. And who doesn’t love a little honey, after all? According to those who are in support of raw, local honey as an allergy suppressant, consuming a spoonful of local, unprocessed honey can help bulk up your immunity to the pollen found in the bees’ sweet nectar. There is a criteria that the honey needs to meet in order to help with your suffering, but follow it and your stuffy, runny symptoms may disappear.

Saltwater gargle: This is home remedy that has survived the test of several generations in my family. According to Health Magazine, “Several studies have found that gargling several times a day with warm salt water can reduce swelling in the throat and loosen mucus, helping to flush out irritants or bacteria.” Studies or not, gargling with salt water is always the go-to in my arsenal for those days when the spring air has gotten to me!
