Do you buy organic over conventional products? Some people believe that organic is just a fancy stamp with no significance while others will buy nothing but organic products. My husband and I choose to buy the majority, I would say 90%, of our groceries organic and I am going to share with you some of the information that helped us make this decision.

In my house, we choose to not eat any processed food or anything that has been “modified or created” by humans/chemicals. Therefore, we choose to buy organic because it ensures we are getting the purest form possible when buying from a grocery store or farmer’s market. Organic produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products do not take antibiotics or growth hormones. Farmers use chemicals formulated to kill living organisms, to say they are not harmful to humans just does not add up to me. The amount of pesticides being used on non-organic produce is alarming and I do not want them in mine or my family’s body.

Here is a list I found at www.about.com which states the fruit/vegetables that contains the most amounts of pesticides when bought non-organic:

  •   Nectarines – 97.3% of nectarines sampled were found to contain pesticides.
  •   Celery – 94.5% of celery sampled were found to contain pesticides.
  •   Pears – 94.4% of pears sampled were found to contain pesticides.
  •   Peaches – 93.7% of peaches sampled were found to contain pesticides.
  •   Apples – 91% of apples sampled were found to contain pesticides.
  •   Cherries – 91% of cherries sampled were found to contain pesticides.
  •   Strawberries – 90% of strawberries sampled were found to contain pesticides.
  •   Imported Grapes – 86% of imported grapes (i.e. Chile) sampled were found to contain pesticides.
  •   Spinach – 83.4% of spinach sampled were found to contain pesticides.
  •   Potatoes – 79.3% of potatoes sampled were found to contain pesticides.
  •   Bell Peppers – 68% of bell peppers sampled were found to contain pesticides.
  •   Red Raspberries – 59% of red raspberries sampled were found to contain pesticides

Another reason we choose organic is:

Organic farming is better for the earth and all living things on it. When grown in organic soil, the produce contains more vitamins and minerals than conventional produce. We eat fruits and vegetables because of the many health benefits they have. I purchase organic to ensure my family is getting the most vitamins and minerals possible from the foods we eat.

Here is a chart I found which demonstrates the minerals you compromise when you choose conventional produce:

I would say the main reason people choose not to purchase organic products is because of the higher cost. I look at it like this: I would rather pay more for good, clean, quality food now than pay for poor health and medical bills later.

“The food you eat

can be either the safest

&

most powerful form of medicine

or

the slowest form of poison.”
