Really there are only 2 options: Running alone or running with others. If you are running alone, is it by choice or are you looking for some running buddies?
Run alone and like it that way? If so, are you concerned about safety? I know I am. I don’t run alone (outside) anymore. I’ve heard or read too many stories about women (in particular) being attacked and some being killed while out for a run. There are lots of things you can do to stay safe while running.
Here’s a couple ideas:
- Let someone know where you are going and how long you expect to be gone.
- Carry your phone and some ID with you.
- Run on well traveled, well lit roads/paths.
- Trust your gut! If something, some car, some person seems suspicious, don’t discount that feeling.
- Comment and post your own safety tip or suggestion!
I recently learned of a project that is on Kickstarter. It’s called Bia and it’s a totally cool looking GPS sports watch that addresses this very issue with a safety alerting system designed with solo workouts in mind. Bia is the first GPS sports watch by women for women (but they have a guys version too). It has all the capabilities of the Garmin 310 but it’s small and lightweight and has some neat functions not available on any other watch. For more info, check out the video on Kickstarter. If you aren’t familiar with Kickstarter, it’s a crowd funding platform linked to your Amazon account. The company, Bia, has to reach its $400K fundraising goal by July 13th to go into production. Simple terms: You pledge any amount to the project but you aren’t charged unless they reach their goal. If they reach their goal, you get charged and you get an awesome watch or other reward based on how much money you pledge.
If you are looking for some running buddies, I recently found out about a nationwide running club for moms. It’s called Moms RUN This Town and they have chapters all over the United States. You can check out the website to see if there is a chapter near you. If there’s not, there is a link and you can start a chapter. According to website: “Our hope is that we can provide a fun club for moms to get together, run/walk/jog and socialize. We hope to provide an online community built of moms who will help answer running questions, encourage each other, train with each other and share their personal running experiences. Moms RUN This Town will bring you training tips, expert advice, fun giveaways, product reviews, and more.” Sounds like fun, right? They also have virtual races, giveaways, and best of all coupon codes!!
