No cookout of mine is complete without the traditional southern baked beans, and my version uses a couple simple Skinny Swaps to give you all the southern-flavored goodness without all the sugar and fat! I lighten up classic versions of this recipe by using turkey bacon and sugar-free maple syrup. Don’t worry, the flavor is still amazing! Skinny Southern Baked Beans

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 25 minutes

Yield: 6 servings

Serving size: a generous 3/4 cup

Ingredients

  • 2 — 15 oz cans navy beans, rinsed + drained
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 Tbsp turkey bacon, cooked + chopped
  • 3 Tbsp sugar-free maple syrup
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 8 oz can tomato sauce
  • 3 Tbsp light brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp dry mustard
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup reduced-sugar BBQ sauce (i used Stubb's® Original)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Spray a baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  3. In a medium size bowl, add navy beans, onion, maple syrup, salt, black pepper, tomato sauce, brown sugar, mustard and Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Mix ingredients with a spoon and transfer beans to the baking dish.
  5. Top beans with BBQ sauce and chopped turkey bacon.
  6. Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes, until bubbly and heated through.
