I don’t know about you, but mornings are always hectic at my house. It doesn’t matter if I get up 15 minutes early or 15 minutes late, I usually end up yelling at Alek to hurry and grab his backpack and get in the car.  As a mom, the last thing I want to do in the morning is send my son off on a negative note.   My visions of June Cleaver sending her boys off with a kiss and a smile are dashed in an instant.

A while back I read somewhere that instead of yelling or getting angry when your children aren’t listening or provoking you in some way to start repeating the bible verse, “Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy etc, etc”. . until you have calmed down. I printed this verse and have it in my kitchen where I can see it every morning. The kitchen seems to be where my morning frustrations start.  I found myself reading this verse way too many mornings in a row.

Although I know the importance of a good healthy breakfast that does not always coincide with our morning schedule. So, more times than I would like to admit, Alek ended up eating breakfast on the way to school. This usually included a snack bar and a glass of milk or cereal in a cup. One of my resolutions this year was to try and fix breakfast and get everybody up and around early enough to actually eat at home. Now, weekday breakfasts are still something like an Eggo waffle and pre-cooked bacon or left over pancakes and sausage, but at least it is on a real plate and we are not driving down the road trying not to spill the milk.

One morning while whipping up a waffle and bacon, I got the bright idea to try and send my son out the door with a smile. So I made a happy face on the plate. Wow, little did I know how much this little thing would change the whole attitude of our morning ritual. Now, every morning Alek looks forward to seeing what design I am going to create out of his breakfast.

Our children deserve to know that they are special and if taking a few extra minutes in the morning to create a funny design out of Eggo waffles does that, then why not??
