As I am nearing (gulp) 43, I have finally come to realize the benefits of actually making healthy choices. I guess I came to the realization just before I turned 40 that my less than healthy ways of my earlier years were no longer suitable for me.
Better Food Choices: I’m sad to say that my food choices were the biggest problem. Quite frankly, sometimes I still struggle but I’m working on it day-by-day. Literally, day-by-day I work on better choices. I’m not going to lie – I mean, I’m a girl from the south that grew up on a farm. I love butter. I love to cook with it, I love it on bread, I just love it! Lucky for me, I’ve found that baking with applesauce is a delicious alternative. It’s all about baby steps and making better choices and I’ll continue working on making better choices day-by-day.
Get Plenty of Sleep: I know this is a hard one for all mommies, because it seems like there aren’t enough hours in the day. This is another big one that I’m still working on. I am guilty of only getting a few hours of sleep a night, but I’m trying to get better. The weeks that I don’t get as much sleep as I need, I can certainly see the effects on my face and my personality.
Exercise: This one I can honestly say that I have no problem with, but it did take me until I was 40 to get a regular exercise routine in my life. For me, it’s running, but for you it may be something else. The key is to find something that you love and that works for you. Running has done so much more for me than physical fitness; it’s given me confidence that I can achieve much more than I ever thought possible. In my 20’s, I would never have dreamed of running a full marathon, but here I am training away for one.
Take Care of Your Skin: My mom told me since before I was a teenager to wash my face every night. I’ve heeded her advice ever since and I’ve passed this down to my own girls. If you can splurge on a good facial a few times a year, you will be amazed at the results. I try to get one every other month, but sometimes my schedule doesn’t allow for it. A great at home facial that I use frequently is simply uncooked oatmeal ground in a blender mixed with honey. Don’t worry about measuring it; just mix it to a spreadable consistency. Apply to a clean dry face and leave on for about 10 minutes. Your skin will be glowing and firmer. I put it on and take a hot bath with Epsom salt for a quick at-home mini spa.
Get Rid of the Negativity: My 40’s have given me the confidence to rid myself of negative people and situations. Being around negativity will bring you down and it will eventually reflect in your attitude. A bad attitude isn’t good at any age.
I joke about being in my 40’s, but honestly I have found a new liberation and confidence that just wasn’t there in my 20’s and 30’s. I believe that comes from making better choices in my life.
