For many of us, summer is a time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, the shining sun and sometimes splash around in the pool or ocean. There are lots of fun summer activities you can do to really boost your calorie burning efforts.

  • Swimming

If you have a swimming pool at home or one at your gym or community center, you should take full advantage of it this summer. The average person can burn between 425 and 525 calories per hour while swimming laps.

  • Hiking

Hiking can not only be a great way to get closer to nature, reduce stress, and give you time to clear your mind, but it can also help you lose weight or maintain a weight you’re happy with. Moderate hiking burns between 435 and 545 calories per hour in the average person.

  • Biking

Bicycling, even at a leisurely pace, will help the average person burn between 290 and 350 calories per hour. If you can’t cycle in your neighborhood, seek out parks with paved trails or put a stationary bike outside so you can enjoy the summer weather while burning those cals.

  • Pilates by the Pool

While you don’t necessarily have to do your Pilates workout poolside, it sure makes for a nice setting to enjoy the summer weather, plus you can jump in to cool off after you finish the workout! Pilates burns between 240 and 420 calories per hour, depending on the intensity level.

  • Yoga in the Park

While yoga may not burn the most calories, it is a great way to stretch your muscles, reduce stress, and prevent injuries. The average person burns anywhere from 175 to 450 calories per hour, depending on the type of yoga and its intensity level.

  • Hula Hoop

Hula Hoops aren’t just for kids! You may have noticed this new fitness trend in one of your local parks. If not, do some research to see if there is a Hula Hoop fitness class or group in your area, or start your own group. Hula Hooping can burn up to 100 calories per every ten minutes of activity.

  • Walking/Jogging

This has always been a classic form of activity and can be enjoyed all year around and is a relatively inexpensive form of exercise. Walking at a moderate pace burns about 320 calories per hour, while jogging burns upwards of 500 calories per hour.

  • Rollerblading

Rollerblading is another fun way to obliterate calories while enjoying the summer sun, especially if you can find a scenic paved trail or sidewalk. The average person burns 540 to 640 calories per hour of rollerblading.

  • Beach Volleyball

If you’re taking a trip to the beach this summer, try to work in a game of beach volleyball as it can burn about 300 calories per hour. Even if you aren’t going to the beach, lots of community parks have beach volleyball courts.

  • Water Aerobics

If you’re going to be splashing around in the pool anyway this summer, you might as well do some water aerobics! This type of exercise burns 400 to 500 calories per hour.

There are many more activities that burn a good amount of calories, so get creative this summer and burn, baby burn! Calories that is… not your skin! Don’t forget to apply sunscreen before heading out to the great outdoors!
